The author reflects on their journey to improve mental health as part of New Year’s resolutions, focusing on combating depression. They recognize the need for a consistent routine to break negative thought patterns. Methods include daily meditation, hydration, positive reminders, and engaging podcasts, aiming for a happier, balanced life.

Becoming a new me

Part of my new year’s resolution outside of my writing goals is to work on my mental and health wellbeing. I’ve struggled with depression for a long time and I am in better space, but I have days where I’m flat and anxious. On these days, I overthink and worry about ailments and work which increases my stress levels. I don’t like it and I can’t seem to break the pattern. I have been meditating, and what I have realised I need a routine, come the weekend I let my meditation slide.

I need to set up a system – thank you Mel Robbins – to make the habit visible, change the way I do things, and I hope this distracts my mind from going down the rabbit hole.

This is what I am doing:

  1. Drinking 2 glasses of water as soon as I get up
  2. Mediate every morning
  3. Listen to a podcast, i.e. Mel Robbins, Dr Mindy Pelz, Dr Joe Dispenza on the drive to and from work
  4. Go for a walk after work every day
  5. Use Post-it notes for reminders of positive habits and messages

It’s hard to change long-term habits and that voice in your head. It’s a conditioned behaviour we learn when a child that gets louder during the adolescent years and echoes over and over in adulthood.

I have decided I will no longer be a victim to my behaviour and conditioned habits. That’s the old me. The new me is happier, balanced and looking forward. I’ve a lot to achieve and more writing to do.

Have you ever been a victim of your conditioned behaviour? What have you done to change patterns and rewire your brain? Please add your comments below.

Thank you for reading.
