Hobbies are an intriguing concept. They are activities people enjoy doing or have a particular interest, like scrapbooking, collecting stamps or coins. My hobbies are fairly standard. I like to read, potter in the garden, go to the beach, going to wineries and photography. The garden and swimming at the beach keep me grounded and in touch with nature. I enjoy going to wineries and trying new wines. We’ve moved on to biodynamic and organic wines. They are really sublime. Taking photos is a hobby that allows me to change my focus and concentrate on the subject.
Photography is a pastime that I really get a lot of pleasure from. I splurged several years back and bought a Pentax camera, tripod and an extra lens. I also have a Sony camera that takes panoramic shots. It’s amazing how many hours you can spend trying to get the right shots. A good thing I can delete the shots that didn’t work! The fun part is changing lenses depending on the shot I want to take.
Below are just a few photos that I’ve taken with the Pentax and Sony. All local sites.

When I go away for a break, I always bring my camera. I know mobile phones have cameras and the quality of the photos has improved, but it’s not the same as using a real camera. It’s a very different experience. There is nothing quite like setting up for a shot. For convenience and for on-the-spot situations where something happens, mobile phones are great. Lugging around a camera and tripod isn’t.
I’d like to spend more time on my hobbies, which a more pleasurable to do than the usual daily grind and I guess that is why they are hobbies. They are what one does when you have a bit of downtime. Although, perhaps if they help with reducing stress and bring a lifework balance, then spending more time doing hobbies would be more beneficial. What do you think? What hobbies do you have?
