As you know, my passion is ancient history, and I am always eager to learn about new developments and finds by archaeologists. Any discovery adds to the richness of our history and the lives of our ancestors. I will share articles, videos, photos relating to latest finds.
My area of interest and one that I have studied and continue to learn about is the Minoan culture. I came across an article where archaeologists have uncovered a courtyard at the Palace of Zominthos, from the Minoan period. Lesser Minoan palaces were religious and political centres, with connection townships, but it was the Palace of Knossos and reigning King, that possessed ruling power.
The Palace of Zominthos is unique in that it was the only palace built on the side of a mountain. The others—Knossos, Phaistos, Malia, Zakros and Kydonia—were constructed on elevated grounds and close to the sea. The Minoans were a thalassocracy, a sea-power, created an empire based on their supremacy on the sea, and established trade with their neighbours, including Ancient Egypt.
