This article is for Alex J. Cavanaugh’s The Insecure Writer’s Support Group. The goal of the support group is to share doubts and concerns, and reassure other writers who have struggled by offering assistance and guidance. Here’s this month’s question:
Are you a risk-taker when writing? Do you try something radically different in style/POV/etc. or add controversial topics to your work?
The short answer is, no.
I did spend time reflecting on whether I am a risk taker, and I tend to consider and weigh up situations before making a decision. On the flip side, looking back at what I have done, I climbed a tree when 3 years old, drove the car at about same age (that’s a story for another time), did stunts on my bike and have the scars for the times I fell off, did some horse riding and not very well, climbed a steep hill only to misstep and roll down the side knocking myself out. I have abseiled, travelled to Europe on my own and bought my first home on my own.
Maybe I do need to take more risks in writing…
Does moving and working in 13 different schools in about 30 years of teaching considered as taking risks? That one I am not sure about.
