I’ve joined Alex J. Cavanaugh’s The Insecure Writer’s Support Group. The goal of the support group is to share doubts and concerns, and reassure other writers who have struggled by offering assistance and guidance.
The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day where we post our thoughts on doubts and the fears and how we triumphed. There are other bloggers listed who share their writing journey and I encourage you to check them out.
Here’s this month’s question:
Everyone has a favourite genre or genres to write. But what about your reading preferences? Do you read widely or only within the genre(s) you create stories for? What motivates your reading choice?
This question is like asking what is your favourite wine, which is red, and Prosecco, just in case you are wondering. I read across all genres however, I don’t read erotica or much romance. I read the latter when a teenager, no surprises there for any adolescent girl.
Topping my list is historical fiction, followed by thrillers and mysteries, fantasy, sci fi, biographies/autobiographies, historical non-fiction, adventure, humour, dystopian… better stop, it’s a long list. I read a wide range to learn the craft of writing as each genre has particular styles and tropes, I may be able to include in my own WIPs. Mostly, I read for enjoyment, as I do get swept into the story and forget about the mechanics used by the writer.
I tend to peruse the historical fiction/fantasy section of a book store first, and then check out the thrillers and mysteries, and if nothing strikes my fancy, then I broaden my search. These are the two genres I write in and drawn to books of particular authors and will try new ones as well.
