Behind the Scenes: How the Story Took Over

I originally outlined the series as five books … but whether it reaches five depends on how book four behaves! Truthfully, I didn’t expect the story to unfold the way it did. The characters had their own ideas, steering the plot in directions I hadn’t planned and demanding more page time. I outline scenes as guideposts, but I write organically—letting the story breathe and evolve. That flexibility keeps the momentum alive, though it means I track every twist and detail to stay consistent. It’s part structure, part surprise—and that’s where the magic happens.

The bond between Nik and his grandfather mirrors my own family ties—strong, enduring, and rooted in heritage. Nik’s teaching background comes from my years in the classroom, while his Greek ancestry echoes my Italian roots. My family’s from southern Italy, and I recently discovered my grandmother called her grandfather ‘Papou’—Greek for grandfather. That tiny detail felt like a whisper from the past, and it helped shape the heart of the story.
